Summertime, and the Eating is Easy at the Standard Plaza

Karena works in the restaurant industry treating some well known chefs.  Chef Mullen who was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis has a new gig on the west side at the Standard Plaza.  Chef Mullen has written a book about how his condition has affected his way of life, his food choices and now his ideas for new dishes.  He continues to work in the fast-paced and very physical world of his regular kitchen at Tertuglia and now at the Standard Plaza.  Karena was able to work with Chef Mullen in combating the effects of this disease and in the ergonomics of his workplace.  Congratulations to Chef Mullen on his endeavors and his health!

Located in the heart of the Meatpacking District, the Standard Plaza offers brightly colored, refined dishes meant for sharing: heirloom tomatoes with smoked burrata, watermelon, crisp quinoa and fino vinaigrette; or grilled sweet shrimp with chorizo, zucchini and Meyer lemon. But go soon: This ephemeral outdoor eatery will exit with the summer sun.

It’s hot out there, but there are better ways to cool off than spending the night in front of the AC: Don your dancing shoes for Good Spirits, a cocktail party and fundraiser happening this week at a rooftop penthouse in the West Village for Hot Bread Kitchen. The East Harlem non-profit bakery and business incubator offers paid culinary training, small business mentoring and ESL classes for foreign-born and low-income New Yorkers, and sells breads inspired by the regions their bakers come from. We love the vegan, gluten-free corn tortillas made from freshly ground organic, heritage, non-GMO corn with nothing added but a bit of lime. That’s some serious bread

Last week Janera Soerel interviewed Jared Koch, founder of Clean Plates, for The 24th Letter. The two discussed bio-individuality, the Clean Plates dining guides, what to have for breakfast, acidic versus alkaline diets, choosing whether or not to eat meat and simple dining steps to improve one’s health. The interview took place prior to the discussion Koch led last weekend on how to eat healthfully when dining out, at Donna Karan’s Urban Zen Wellness event in Sag Harbor. What’s on your plate?
